After her rebirth

Chapter 307 Always Feel Disappointed

Katniss didn't get a chance to respond to Clara before Dylan hurried over and said, "Clara, cut it out. Dad asked her to come see Mom."

Clara pouted, clearly unhappy, but kept quiet.

The caregiver glanced at Katniss, looking a bit concerned.

"Go in and check on her, Katniss. If you can, let me know how she's doing," Dylan sighed.

Katniss walked into the room without acknowledging Clara or the caregiver, heading straight to the bedside.

"She should be able to hear people talking. Try to talk to her more often and watch for any reactions," Katniss said.

Clara's eyes widened, and she looked at the caregiver.

The caregiver took a step back, staying silent.

Dylan noted Katniss's words and asked, "Is there really nothing you can do?"

"I'm not a miracle worker," Katniss replied, looking at Dylan with a puzzled expression. "Or do you think I am?"

Dylan didn't want to continue the conversation, but Clara rushed over, "What do you mean by that? Are you giving him a hard time? If you don't want to help Mom, fine, but why be so sarcastic?"

"No one asked for your opinion," Katniss said dismissively, then walked out.

Dylan didn't follow her this time. Instead, he looked at Elodie on the bed and leaned in close, "Mom, can you hear me? Can you respond, maybe move a finger?"

He thought, all Oliver needed was some acknowledgment or denial from Elodie. If she could move her finger, even if she wasn't fully awake, she could still testify for Oliver. But he was disappointed; Elodie didn't respond.

"Dylan, it's no use. I've been talking to Mom for days, and she hasn't moved," Clara said.

Dylan looked at Clara, "Thanks, Clara. From now on, when you talk to Mom, pay close attention to any reactions. Let me know if anything changes."

Clara nodded obediently, though she didn't fully understand.

After Dylan left, the caregiver asked Clara, "Ms. Manners, who was that woman? Why was Mr. Manners so polite to her? Can she really tell anything about your mom's condition?"

The caregiver was worried that Katniss might report her negligence, so she subtly probed Clara about Katniss's identity.

Clara, with clear disdain, said, "She's no good. Dylan is only being polite because he hopes she can wake Mom up, but all she does is talk. She has no real intention of helping."

As Clara spoke, neither of them noticed Elodie's finger twitch slightly.

"I see. Ms. Manners, you should go home and rest. I'll take care of things here," the caregiver said with a smile.

Clara didn't want to stay any longer. The doctors had said there was a 90% chance Elodie wouldn't wake up, so Clara had shifted her focus to pleasing Desmond and her brothers.

Once Clara left, the caregiver sat by the bed, casually cracking sunflower seeds and watching funny videos. Taking care of a comatose patient was easy, especially when the family didn't visit often.

Meanwhile, over at the Boleyn family...

Desmond knelt in front of Gabriel, his face blank, but his clenched jaw showed his defiance.

"Do you realize you almost blew our deal with the Elise family?" Gabriel scolded, pointing a finger at Desmond. "Why did you have to provoke Brynn and make her mad?"

"It was her fault. I just asked her to apologize," Desmond shot back.

"You still bring that up!" Gabriel slammed the table. "Has Clara bewitched you? Brynn's status is way above Clara's. How could Brynn possibly apologize to Clara?" To Gabriel, the two were worlds apart.

Desmond stubbornly said, "I was just talking to her. How was I supposed to know she'd get upset?"

Brynn had gone back to the Elise family, crying to her parents, which led to Gabriel's current tirade. The two families had been discussing engagement plans, but Brynn's tears had put everything on hold.

Gabriel was exasperated, unable to understand why Desmond was still secretly in contact with Clara.

"Didn't I tell you to stop seeing Clara? Why are you still helping her find doctors for her mom?" Gabriel remembered Desmond's promise to cut ties with Clara after they helped her with that issue.noveldrama

Desmond replied confidently, "I promised Clara, and I can't break my word."

"Can't break your word? Now you've made me break my word to the Elise family! How are you going to fix this? Will you apologize to the Elise family yourself, or do you want me get embarrassed with you?"

Gabriel always felt disappointed in Desmond. He was the son of a woman Gabriel loved, but he never measured up to Maximilian, the product of a business marriage. This fact was like a fishbone stuck in Gabriel's throat, impossible to remove or swallow, causing him constant discomfort.

"I'll apologize, but you can't make things difficult for Clara."

"You're still making demands? You..." Gabriel raised his hand to discipline his

troublesome son, but a soft voice interrupted.

"Don't hit our son, Gabriel," Emily said from the doorway.

She had been listening for a while but hadn't entered. She looked at Gabriel with timid, cautious eyes.

Gabriel held back his anger and told Desmond to leave.

Desmond glanced at Emily and left.

Emily approached Gabriel, gently patting his chest to calm him. "Don't be mad at Desmond. He didn't mean it. The Elise family went too far. Desmond said she secretly took his phone and blocked someone."

Gabriel felt a bit better after Emily's soothing, and he didn't argue. He just said, "She blocked Clara."

"It's not about who she blocked. It's about her not respecting our son," Emily said, leaning against Gabriel and sighing softly. "Our son isn't even married to her yet, and she's already acting like this. If we make him apologize now, his future with her will be even harder."
