Chapter 793
Fleming's frown deepened. "Alright, you two handle it for now."
He hung up and looked up, meeting Esmeralda's stiff, uncertain expression.
His lips pressed into a thin line as he watched her for a few seconds. "Sorry, something urgent just came up. I've already reserved our table. You can call your friend to keep you company."
Esmeralda hardly had a moment to process this.
Fleming had already snapped his seatbelt into place, pressed the gas, and sped off, kicking up a cloud of dust behind him.
She stared after his car for a long moment.
Finally, she blinked, shrugged her shoulders as if to reassure herself, and muttered, "Alright then."
Left alone, Esmeralda glanced around, feeling a little lost.
Her stomach growled. She thought, Well, I'm here already-why make things harder for myself?
With a sigh, she walked inside, found their table, and ordered a few dishes.
The food looked appetizing enough, but every bite tasted bland, as if she were chewing wax.
Her posture, so straight before, suddenly slumped. With a piece of foie gras stuffed in her cheek, she sat there, looking somewhat forlorn.noveldrama
She found herself missing Elodie and Alexander.
But today had been so humiliating.
A strange mix of embarrassment and an undefinable sense of grievance welled up within her.
If she thought about it, maybe she was just being petty. After all, they were siblings-family.
Esmeralda sniffled, then forced herself to chew and swallow.
It's fine, she told herself. Sooner or later, she'd be family too.
Nothing to get worked up over.
After leaving, Jarrod took Elodie straight back to their apartment instead of anywhere else.
Elodie was still a little worried about Jarrod's health.
Once inside, she frowned at him. "Shouldn't you be resting for a few days?"
He hadn't even fully recovered and was already running around.
Jarrod shrugged off his coat. The faint outline of bandages was visible beneath his shirt.
"I'm in better shape than you think. No need to worry."
Elodie was momentarily at a loss for words.
She wasn't worried-she just thought he was terrible at looking after himself.
At this hour, Cara was off work. The house was empty except for the two of them.
Elodie followed him into the kitchen as he poured himself a glass of water. She watched him tilt his head back, his Adam's apple moving as he drank.
After a moment, she asked abruptly, "What's the deal with the ring?"
If she remembered right, the ring had supposedly been rushed by some random jeweler-nothing special.
Jarrod lowered his gaze to meet hers, setting the glass down. "It's just like you heard earlier."
She looked him up and down, feeling more and more that this man was far more complicated than he let on. All these years, he'd never let anything slip.
"I'd like to hear you say it yourself."
Jarrod arched an eyebrow. "Alright. The week before we registered our marriage, flew overseas just to get that ring. It had already been named
'Devotion' a long time ago. I liked
the
name-it felt like a blessing, a symbol for us."
He'd chosen it for what it meant, hoping it would bring luck and meaning to their relationship.
"Everything happened so fast
between us. There wasn't time to get a custom ring made for you, and I didn't want to give you something random. It was fate, really-there just happened to be an auction, so I flew out at the last minute."
Maybe their start hadn't been perfect, but when it came to their marriage, he refused to cut corners or let Elodie feel slighted.
Elodie's fingers curled unconsciously. She cleared her throat and asked, "And yours?"
Jarrod glanced at the wedding band on his own hand. "I had it rushed just a week before we got the marriage certificate."
All he'd needed was for the designer
to echo the unique elements from Elodie's ring. It didn't matter that they weren't an identical pair He'd make it work. He'd make them fit.
What do you think?
