Chapter 362: Tying loose ends...
Ramsey
I glanced back at the pack house, knowing Lyla would be out soon.
"When Lyla comes out, take her there. I’ll join you shortly," I instructed. "Make sure she doesn’t suspect anything unusual."
"Understood, Alpha."
I turned away from the car and headed toward the underground holding cells. There was one more bond I needed to sever before tonight—one that would hurt almost as much as losing Lyla, but for entirely different reasons.
The holding cells were carved into the bedrock beneath the pack house, lined with silver-infused steel that prevented anyone from breaking free. Two guards stood at attention as I approached.
"Leave us," I ordered. "I need to speak with the prisoner alone."
They exchanged glances but didn’t question my command.
I found Lenny in the third cell, sitting on the narrow cot with his back to the door. He hadn’t acknowledged my presence, but I knew he was aware of my presence. The Beta bond between us hummed with tension and unspoken pain.
I lowered myself to sit cross-legged on the cold stone floor in front of his cell, the metal bars between us like a physical manifestation of everything that had gone wrong. The overhead light cast harsh shadows that made the space feel even more oppressive.
Minutes passed in heavy silence. Lenny remained motionless; his shoulders were rigid with anger and hurt. Finally, I spoke.
"We need to break our bond."
No response.
"I’m going to reject you as my Beta, Lenny. It has to be done."
Still nothing.
I sighed, running my hands through my hair. "This isn’t easy for me either, but—"
Lenny’s laughter cut through my words. It started as a low chuckle, then grew into something wild and unhinged—the sound of a man whose world had completely shattered. His shoulders shook with the force of it, and when he finally turned to face me, his eyes were bright with unshed tears and bitter amusement.
"You want to know what’s funny?" he said, his voice rough with emotion. "I regret it. I regret ever letting you and Lyla reunite. I should have kept you apart."
"Lenny—"
"Why?" he demanded, gripping the cell bars so tightly his knuckles turned white. "Why would you want to give your life for her? What is it about her that makes you so willing to throw everything away?"
"You don’t understand love," I said quietly.
"I don’t understand love?" Lenny’s laugh was sharp, painful. "This is love, Ramsey! The bond between us—Alpha to Beta—it doesn’t mean I loved you any less than she does. Have you ever stopped to think about me? About my feelings? Do they matter at all to you?" noveldrama
The raw pain in his voice made my chest tighten. I’d heard about the Beta bond and how deep it could run. At first, I thought it was an ordinary attraction, but I had seen Beta Gregory after Alpha Logan died—the bond between Alpha and his Beta defiled love in any form.
I didn’t think I would ever relate, but now, faced with his anguish, I realised it was truly a thing.
"Lenny, your feelings do matter to me. You matter to me. But I need to do this. I love Lyla, I love our babies, I can save them."
"You don’t know that," he shook his head. "What if this is a ploy by Miriam? That woman would do anything to keep her daughter alive. What if she fed those lies to Circe?"
"Circe is not someone to be easily swayed by anyone, and you know that. She has her powers, different from Miriam."
"She calls her mother, Ramsey. She’s loyal to Miriam. "Because of her," he said bitterly. "Always because of her."
"Because love comes with responsibility," I corrected. "I promised to protect her when I took those vows, and I want to be true to myself and my words."
The pain in his eyes was unbearable. I’d always known Lenny’s loyalty went beyond duty and was pure friendship, but I’d never allowed myself to understand the depth of his feelings. Now, faced with losing everything, I finally understood what my blindness had cost him.
"I’m sorry," I whispered. "I’m so sorry, Lenny. My mind is made up."
"Sorry doesn’t fix anything," he said, turning away again. "Sorry doesn’t make tonight hurt any less."
"I know. But I need you to understand—what I’m doing isn’t about rejecting you or what we’ve meant to each other. It’s about protecting the people I love. All of them, including you."
"Don’t." Lenny’s voice was sharp. "Don’t you dare include me in your noble sacrifice. If you cared about me, about your grandfather, about the people who have given their lives for you, you’d find another way."
"There is no other way."
"There’s always another way!" he shouted, spinning to face me again. "You’re just too blinded by your precious mate to see it!"
I stood up slowly. "This conversation is over. I came here to break our bond, and that’s what I’m going to do."
"Then leave," Lenny said coldly. "I don’t want to see you anymore."
I reached through the bars, placing my hand on the cold metal. The formal words felt like poison on my tongue, but they had to be spoken.
"I, Ramsey Kincaid, Lycan Alpha of White Moon Pack and Lycan Leader of the packs in our world, reject you, Lenny Stone, as my Beta."
For the longest time, he just stared at me, his eyes wide with shock and grief. Then, slowly, he turned his back on me again.
When he faced me once more, his expression had changed into something cold and lethal. He rushed to the gate of his cell and grabbed my hand through the bars.
"If I ever make it out of here," he said in a steely tone that sent chills down my spine, "I’ll make sure Lyla does her job properly."
The threat was clear—if he escaped, he’d ensure that Lyla fulfilled the original prophecy, that she died in my place. The very thing I was sacrificing everything to prevent. fr\(e)ew(e)b.(n)o (v)(e)l.com
He released my hand and stepped back with a satisfied grin that looked wrong.
"I, Lenny Stone, Lycan Beta of White Moon Pack and Beta to the Lycan Leader, reject your rejection."
What do you think?
