Chapter 473
If it weren't for Dahlia stepping in and stirring things up, Charles and Eve wouldn't be in this mess. Charles wouldn't have hurt Eve so deeply, and Charlie might still be alive. There might have been a chance for Charles and Eve to find their way back to each other. But now, the damage is done, and Charlie's gone forever. There's no going back for them.
"Where's Dahlia?" Josephine kept her emotions in check as she asked Charles. She had called him in to find out how he dealt with Dahlia after discovering her deceit and the havoc she wreaked on Eve and Charlie. It was why she rushed to Charles as soon as she woke up. Without justice for Charlie, Eve can't truly move on. As a mother, she wants her daughter to find happiness, and Brooks seems like a good guy for that.
"She's at the police station, locked up for 48 hours."
Josephine's breath hitched at his answer. She grabbed an apple from the bedside and hurled it at Charles. "Get out!"
Josephine knew that without solid evidence, they couldn't pin Charlie's and Rosa's deaths on Dahlia right away. Charles had managed to get Dahlia detained because he believed Josephine's story about being pushed down the stairs by Dahlia. That was all he could do without concrete proof. But thinking about Dahlia's nasty deeds and seeing Charles, her accomplice, getting off easy made her furious.
Charles stayed put, kneeling, taking the hit as the apple bounced off his head, leaving a red mark.
Josephine wasn't satisfied. She grabbed more apples and threw them at him. Some hit his face, some his head, others just clattered to the floor. Charles didn't budge, letting Josephine vent her anger. He felt he deserved to kneel there, guilty as charged for his wrongs against Eve and Charlie.noveldrama
"Charles, stop acting all pitiful. Didn't you hear what your godmother said? She told you to scram!" Adam chimed in. "If you really feel guilty, go find evidence and avenge Charlie. Until then, you have no right to face them!"
Adam was fiercely protective. To him, Charles had to avenge Charlie to earn the right to seek forgiveness from his godmother and Evelyn. Without that, he had no right to even apologize, let alone dream of a second chance.
"Ms. Josephine, please rest," Charles said softly, not wanting to upset her further. Once she stopped throwing things, he got up and walked out. As he passed Evelyn, he hesitated his eyes filled with regret and longing. How could he not regret it? If he hadn't mistaken someone else for her, things could have been
different. Even if his Debbie had forgotten him, she fell for him all
over again when they met. But he had let her down by choosing wrong.
Evelyn turned away from his gaze, her face blank, and went to her mother's side. Charles took one last look at the mother and daughter before leaving.
Dahlia was held for forty-eight hours. When the police took her, she tried calling Charles, but he didn't pick up. Taken to the holding cell, she remembered the last time Evelyn got her locked up and she got bullied. This time, she tried to keep a low profile, but still ended up getting pushed around.
By day, she had to massage the cell boss's legs and shoulders. At night, they made her sleep by the toilet bucket. Used to a life of luxury, the stench was unbearable, keeping her awake. She didn't dare make a scene. Every second felt like torture. The more she suffered, the slower time seemed to drag on. Just one night was too much. She tried to contact Charles for help, but got nothing. She endured the agonizing forty-eight hours.
When she finally got out, she sped out of the police station in her wheelchair. Not having bathed for two days and stuck near a toilet bucket, she was rank. Dahlia couldn't stand it. Far from Greenrose, she flagged down a taxi, eager to get to the nearest mall and change into clean clothes. She couldn't stand her own smell.
As the taxi pulled away, she noticed the driver peeking at her through the mirror. Already in a foul mood from the past couple of days, she snapped. Covering her face out of self-consciousness, she glared at the driver and snapped, "What are you staring at, you creep?" She looked down on drivers like him. Her outburst made the driver look closer and realize she was Dahlia.
What do you think?
