The Queen Returns—And She's Unforgiving

Chapter 23

The next day, out of habit, Sophia went to Lucas' marital home after school. She was starving and immediately called for Evelyn once she entered the door.

"Evelyn?"

A housekeeper came out to take her bags instead, saying, "Mrs. Grant isn't home at the moment."

Frowning, Sophia asked in surprise, "Isn't she supposed to be done cooking by now?"

After all, she knew that Evelyn would prepare lunch for Lucas on a daily basis.

Their marital house was also close to Bluezen, so Evelyn would always meal prep before going to work, rush back home during her lunch break, and have Michael deliver the food to Lucas.

Despite the fact that Lucas refused to see her, she had never stopped sending his lunch.

Hence, Sophia came over today, intending to have a taste of Evelyn's cooking. Although Evelyn might have been useless, she was a quick learner and her cooking suited Sophia's taste perfectly.

However, Sophia found out that there was no food awaiting her, putting her in a foul mood.

Why was Evelyn becoming more and more unreliable?

The housekeeper was also confused as to what was happening. Evelyn had always been gentle and considerate. Back then, she would not even go on a business trip for Lucas' sake.

Now, she wasn't even coming home anymore.

In truth, Sophia was in a terrible mood throughout the day. She found out the day before that Tiffany caught a fever, so she had planned to take the day off from school to visit Tiffany.

However, it wasn't proper of her to show up empty-handed.

She also knew that sick people should eat something nourishing and warm, but she did not know how to cook. It would be insincere of her to buy pre-cooked food, so she had thought of Evelyn.

Evelyn was a good cook, and she could ask Evelyn to cook something for her. So, Sophia plopped down on the couch and called Evelyn.

Evelyn had just finished a meeting with Sebastian on the endless possibilities a drone could have. She had some new ideas and planned to enhance some of the drones' internal systems.

Not wanting to waste her time eating in the cafeteria, she asked Sebastian to bring some food up for her.

When she noticed that Sophia was calling, she quickly declined the call. However, Sophia was relentless and continued to call her repeatedly.

Sophia's calls were beginning to affect her work, so Evelyn decided to block Sophia's number.

After finally having some peace, she quickly got back to work.

On the other end, Sophia bit her lips, feeling slightly pissed as she listened to the busy tone.

Why was Evelyn ignoring her? Evelyn would never ignore her calls in the past as well as behave in a gentle and accommodating behavior in an attempt to please her.

Left with no choice, she called Lucas.

Lucas' voice was cold as he answered the phone. "What's wrong?"

"Lucas, I can't seem to get a hold of Evelyn, and she's not answering any of my calls. I went to your place, but she has not come back to cook yet."

He thought for a moment, after which he answered, "I've not been in contact with her, so I wouldn't know."

"Can't you just ask her to go home and cook some food for me?"

"Sophia, are the restaurants outside just for show?" Lucas' cold voice rang out, his voice sounding sharp and stern.

Sophia cowered back, murmuring, "Tiffany's sick, and I want to check up on her, but I can't go empty-handed either. Lucas, how am I supposed to get her to come home?"

Lucas was silent for quite some time before he said faintly, "Your grandma loves her cooking."

With that, he ended the call.

Sophia was momentarily confused before she quickly came to her senses. That's right! She could use her grandma's name to make Evelyn come home and cook for her!

...

After dealing with some issues with the drone systems, she made an appointment with her doctor at 3:00 pm.

She had informed Sebastian that she had to head out, so he asked her whether she needed him to give her a ride.

However, she rejected his offer since she had no intention of letting him and Justine know about her condition.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated, and she realized that Sophia had messaged her again.

Sophia claimed that Maria had not had much of an appetite lately and was thinking of her cooking. She had also sent a few messages, complaining about how she wasn't able to reach her.

Evelyn frowned. Was Maria unwell? She instinctively wanted to go check up on her.

However, she quickly remembered that she was about to divorce Lucas, so going to the Grant Manor felt inappropriate.

Looking at the time, Evelyn decided to return to the home she shared with Lucas. When one of the housekeepers, Margaret Linwood, saw her, their eyes lit up as they asked, "Mrs. Grant, you're finally home! We've already cleaned your room. Would you like to rest for a bit?"

"It's alright. I'll leave in a bit. I'm just here to cook some food. Could you help me deliver it to the Grant Manor for Mrs. Grant Senior later?" Evelyn asked as she changed into a pair of slippers.

Maria had treated her well, and Arthur used to be comrades in war with her grandfather. After discovering that Maria was sick and missed her cooking, Evelyn couldn't bring herself to refuse Maria's wishes.

Margaret was stunned as she nodded dazedly.

Evelyn was quick as she made some almond oatmeal and some other snacks for Maria. Then, she placed all the food in a set of containers she had chosen.

"Margaret, thank you for your help."

Confused, Margaret asked, "Mrs. Grant, are you leaving again?"

Evelyn paused momentarily halfway as she changed her shoes. She stared at thenoveldrama

pair of yellow flip-flops and did not answer Margaret's question.

Instead, she smiled faintly, answering, "Margaret, you can just throw them away."
