He placed his hands on her waist and, with care, lifted her as if she were a child.

“Ah.” Elissa instinctively gasped and wrapped her arms around his neck. Even when he put her down and her feet touched the tops of his shoes, she didn’t let go.

“It’s okay now.” Ernest held her steady, one hand supporting her back, the other keeping her close. “You’re safe now. No one’s going to hurt you.”

Elissa nodded and responded in a shaky voice, “Thank you…”

Ernest managed a bitter smile. How could he accept her thanks? She didn’t know it yet, but he was the reason for all her suffering.

At this moment, Ernest gathered her in his arms. “Let’s go.”
