Chapter 126
Chapter 126
"You little ungrateful one, the first thing I did when I returned to the country was look for you. Do you think I'd just take anyone? Huh?" He wrapped her in his arms, whispering softly in her ear, "I only want you, just you."
His deep, mellow voice had a certain allure, with each word sinking into her heart. Seeing him gritting his teeth, Ophelia smiled slyly. It was the first time she was aware of just how unreasonable she could be.
As the dance ended, Ophelia took the lead and kissed Kenneth on the lips. She thought, 'Claiming territory? I can do that, too.'
The entire banquet hall erupted in thunderous applause. Compliments flowed endlessly, but Kenneth had no time for these people. Agreeing to start the dance was already giving the Carnegie family enough respect.
As the music played again, everyone in the banquet hall invited partners and moved to the dance floor.
Kenneth led Ophelia to a side to rest, offering her a few small cakes he had picked out. Green matcha mille-feuille, green matcha cupcakes, green macaroon, green apple pudding... all green. Ophelia was speechless. She thought, 'So, he only remembered I liked green, didn't he?'
Ophelia held her plate, savoring the exquisite desserts on it.
Her gaze instinctively turned towards the people from the Carnegie family. When Kenneth had shown up earlier, she took notice. Aside from Theo, everyone else just found out about her relationship with Kenneth today, and their shock was genuine, not something they could fake.
She pondered, 'Reflecting on how they had stood in front of me, I felt somewhat moved!
Members from the three prominent families occasionally came over to greet Kenneth. Throughout the night, no one dared to trouble Ophelia again.
Just as the banquet was nearing its conclusion, Ophelia received a call from Caleb. "Ophelia, the people we sent to keep an eye on Heather reported that she and her young son were taken by debt collectors. Should we step in?"
Ophelia frowned, her face all scrunched up. If Heather had been taken, she definitely wouldn't have gotten involved. But Scott was also caught up in it. "Yes, but don't make it obvious. Only assist Scott," Ophelia said. "Okay," Caleb replied.
Until the banquet was over, Ophelia hadn't heard any updates from Caleb. Ophelia followed the Carnegie family to see the guests off. She still understands these basic courtesies.
As it was getting late, after saying goodbye to the Carnegie family, Ophelia left with Kenneth.
Inside the banquet hall, only the Carnegie family remained. Clara finally voiced her doubts, "Dad, did you know about Elia's relationship with Kenneth from the start? Is that why you accepted Elia as your god-granddaughter?"
"Yeah, Dad, how is Elia supposed to see our family now that you did this?" Finlay and Bethany walked over to join the conversation.
Confronted with such questions, Theo's face darkened. "Is this how you speak to your father?" Clara and Finlay lowered their heads, and the younger ones kept quiet, not daring to speak.
"Let me tell you, first, I was asked by Kenneth, and second, I truly like that girl, which is why I accepted her as my god-granddaughter. What kind of person do you think I am? Humph!"
After saying that, Theo clasped his hands behind his back and walked off with the defiance of a young child.
"Clara, you misunderstood Dad!" Finlay said quickly, nervously avoiding Clara's gaze.
Clara was at a loss for words. Finlay had been thinking the same thing as her just now. Clara thought, 'Always shifting blame since childhood.'

Ophelia felt a bit uneasy on the way back to Rosewood Manor.
Kenneth saw all the emotions she was trying hard to conceal. "Why don't you call and find out?"
"I'm just worried about Scott. After all, he's still a kid and different from the others at Hastings Villa."
She planned to buy Emily's shares when the court put them up for auction and then transfer them to Scott. At the very least, it would secure his future.noveldrama
"Okay," Kenneth replied. Kenneth held her hand, gently rubbing his thumb over the ring on her ring finger.
Buzz! The phone had just buzzed twice when Ophelia immediately answered. "How's it going?"
"Ma'am, we're at the Westoira Reservoir. You should... come here yourself." Suddenly, something dropped on the ground. Ophelia's heart suddenly dropped. Without a second thought, she instructed the driver to head to the Westoira Reservoir.
The stifling air in the car made it hard for her to breathe, so she rolled down the window, letting the cold wind whip in.
She was still wearing her evening gown from the party. Kenneth frowned but didn't stop her—he just took off his coat and placed it over her shoulders.
There was no traffic at this time, so the car quickly reached the Westoira Reservoir. It was an abandoned hydroelectric station with several run-down factory warehouses. From afar, they saw Caleb and his crew's cars parked in front of a warehouse.
Ophelia got out of the car and headed straight for the warehouse. The rapid clacking of high heels on the concrete floor echoed loudly in the empty warehouse.
Caleb and his men held guns, aiming at a group of cowering men on the ground, their heads covered.
In front of them lay a boy.
The dim glow of the incandescent light cast an eerie shadow over the boy's pale face. He wore light jeans, and his white hoodie was smeared with blood. Dark blood pooled and spread on the ground beneath him.
He lay there quietly, his chest completely still.
Ophelia's coat slipped from her shoulders as she knelt down, her trembling fingers slowly reaching for the boy's carotid artery. "Scott..." she whispered his name and each syllable was painfully pronounced.
The boy lay unresponsive on the concrete floor.
Her mind was filled with the memory of the boy's careful voice calling her "sis" over the phone just a couple of days ago. "Scott, I'm here. Look at me, okay? Don't stay silent, Scott..."
She realized she was wrong; she shouldn't have ignored him because she pursued revenge. She thought, 'Could I have another chance if he woke up? I promised to always be there when he called for me.'
Her tears, like broken beads, fell and hit the ground, but the boy remained unmoving. "Kenneth, come here and check if he's still breathing..." Ophelia turned her head, her eyes wet with tears, placing all her hopes on Kenneth.
Kenneth's brow furrowed with concern as he gently lifted her off the ground, wrapping her securely in his coat and holding her close. "Call an ambulance!" Kenneth ordered, turning his head slightly.
Caleb was stunned for a brief second before quickly following the order.
"Kenneth, it's all my fault. I'm the one who got Scott hurt..." she said. She thought, 'This never happened in my previous life, so why is it happening now?'
"It's not your fault," Kenneth gently stroked her head, his voice as soft as can be. Ophelia was trembling uncontrollably, sobbing her heart out.
Before long. the ambulance arrived, and the paramedics quickly checked the person on the ground. placed him on a stretcher. and lifted him into the ambulance.
